How to Clean an LCD Screen PDF Print E-mail

We recommend using LCD cleanser that can be purchased at any electronics store," says a customer service tech for Westinghouse, a manufacturer of popular LCD televisions. The cleaner can be found in both spray and wipe form. But what exactly goes into these LCD solutions?

Kai Hui of MG Chemicals, makers of one of many available LCD cleaners, explains, "The main ingredient in most wipes on the market is water. There needs to be a small percentage of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to help get rid of the grease from busy fingers." Some LCD cleaning solutions may include up to 50 percent IPA, according to Hui, but any more than that could damage the screens.

Since I'd never suggest you spend more money than you have to, I'd start with a clean, soft cloth and regular ol' tap water. You can add just a capful of isopropyl alcohol to a glass of water if you need something to help loosen the greasy gunk on the screen, so it can wipe off more easily. Get the cloth damp and then apply to the screen instead of splashing the screen and trying to wipe up the liquid; and always — always — use a clean cloth, as tiny, hard particles trapped in the fibers can scratch the surface of your screen.

So far the Conflicker computer virus has had more bark than bite, though experts say it is still a threat.

Multimedia Watch The Video The virus was scheduled to erupt on as many as 12 million computers around the world on April 1st, but things have been very quiet so far. It was feared that the virus could take control of computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system and might steal personal information, but experts say it has had difficult communicating with its creators.

Ken Wardinsky, the Chief Technology Officer for the MSU Great Falls College of Technology says a Microsoft security patch has helped protect computers from the virus, but it still could be a threat.

"Basically for now people are just kind of waiting to see what has happened,” said Wardinsky. “They suspect that the inventors of the worm are basically waiting for the hype to die down and then they'll trigger it to use it for something. But until that happens we don't really know what is going to happen."

If your concerned that your computer may have the virus, one tell-tale sign is that it blocks access to Microsoft’s website as well as those of many antivirus companies.

identify RAM chips? PDF Print E-mail

Does anyone know how to identify RAM chips? I ask because there is a computer store nearby that sells parts they pulled from computers & servers.

RAM chip modules are in a small box and sell for $1.50 each (AS-IS) with no identifying stickers left on them. The store assembles & sells its own used computers, so there probably aren't any 256MB or even 128MB modules left in them.

So how do you tell the difference between Fast Page, EDO, and SDRAM (PC100/133) memory? I think the majority of the ram is FP & EDO. I think I did see a few SDRAM DIMMs, but how do you know what type & size they are by looking at them?

Is there a site that can help with this?   Click Read More
